SUPPLIES: – Baked 8″ round cake. – Orange and black buttercream.  – Buttercream Smoother – Assorted Spatula Set – Wooden skewer – Press-n-seal wrap or other plastic wrap – 1 ½ inch styrofoam ball – A block of foam – White fondant or gumpaste – Small amount of black fondant  – Small fondant roller – Cornstarch

Take the wooden skewer and cut out a piece about three to four inches long. It needs to be long enough to stick one end in the styrofoam ball and one end in the block of foam, but enough area in between for the fondant to drape down.

Stick the end of the skewer piece into the styrofoam ball. It doesn’t need to go all the way to the top, just far enough in where it’s stable.

Take a piece of press-n-seal or you can use any type of plastic wrap, but the press-n-seal will stick better, and cover the styrofoam ball in it. Just wrap it around.

Roll out the white fondant or gumpaste. Fondant works better as the gumpaste dries out quicker.   You want to roll out about a 14″ – 15″ circle.

Dust both sides of the fondant with cornstarch. Now, drape the fondant over the styrofoam ball. You’ll have to fidget with it to get the draping to look right.

Once you’ve got the draping how you want it, just set it aside overnight to dry. Don’t wait more than 24 hours to do this next part, but the fondant does need to be set up and firm before you do this.

Carefully pick up the ghost. Grab the skewer and slowly pull out the styrofoam ball. Just do it slowly and carefully, so you don’t break or crack the ghost. Once you’ve pulled the styrofoam ball out, just set the ghost back onto the foam to firm up completely for another 24 hours.

Roll two tiny balls of black fondant and flatten only slightly with your finger. These will be the ghost’s eyes. Take a slightly larger amount of the black fondant, roll and elongate it a bit. Press down with your finger to flatten it out slightly. This will be the mouth.

Once the ghost is completely firm, paint on a bit of shortening where you want the eyes and mouth, then stick them on. The shortening will allow you to move them around a bit.

Take a small LED battery powered light and wrap the base in plastic wrap to make it food safe. Turn it on and set it on top of your cake.

Now gently set the finished ghost on top of your cake!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
